Do you bring a lawyer to mediation?
Typically, most mediation situations do not require the parties to obtain their own legal counsel. Mediation is designed to help people work through conflicts without the need of a judge or legal proceedings. Therefore, lawyers are seldom needed in mediation situations.
Can I take my new partner to mediation?
If you’d like to bring a support person the other party needs to approve that person, and their role in the mediation is not to have a voice at the table – just to sit with you and talk to you in the breaks. It is not often helpful to bring a new partner, although very occasionally it has happened and been OK.
What should you wear to mediation?
Please wear dress clothes to mediation. Pants (non-denim) and a dress shirt (tie optional, but encouraged) are appropriate for men. For women, pants (non-denim) or a skirt and blouse are appropriate. Remember that first impressions can influence a mediator’s recommendations.
