What comes after a marriage license?
A marriage certificate is a document that proves you're married. The married couple will then receive a certified copy of the marriage certificate. Most states require both spouses, the officiant, and one or two witnesses, to sign the marriage certificate. This is often done just after the ceremony.
How long do I have to wait to get married after I get my marriage license?
California marriage licenses are only valid for 90 days, so you must obtain your marriage license within the 90 days immediately prior to your wedding date. No blood test is required. There is no waiting period. The clerk will give you your license immediately.
What happens if you don’t sign your marriage license?
In most cases, you are still considered married without registering the license. For example, California law requires the officiant to return the marriage license to the county clerk or recorder within 10 days of the ceremony. If, for some reason, this does not happen, you are still married.
