Once a crime is reported to the police they will start an investigation. The police may need to talk to you again during the investigation. They may ask you to make another statement. You may be asked to identify a suspect or recovered property.
Can you make a police statement over the phone?
Phoning 131 444 allows you to report crime over the phone. If the crime you wish to report can not be taken over the phone, due to its serious nature, the operator will assist you by advising where you can go to make the report, or by arranging for police to come and see you.
Do you have to tell cops where you are going?
Remember to ask for their name, rank, and place of duty. The police, by law, have to tell you this information. You should write this down so you don’t forget.
Can cops drop charges?
Only the prosecutor or the arresting officer is able to drop charges. There are a number of reasons for charges to be dropped in a criminal case. Though some people believe that charges can be dropped at the request of the victim, that is not the case. Only the prosecutor’s office can make that decision.
Can you tell a cop I don’t answer questions?
No. You have the constitutional right to remain silent. In general, you do not have to talk to law enforcement officers (or anyone else), even if you do not feel free to walk away from the officer, you are arrested, or you are in jail. You cannot be punished for refusing to answer a question.
Can you ask a police officer to leave your property?
Police may come into your house if you give your consent. However this consent can be later withdrawn. Once you have asked them to leave and they refuse to do so, they are trespassing if they have no other lawful grounds for being on your property.
