If you owe back alimony, your former spouse can garnishee your Social Security retirement benefits by obtaining a judgment against you for the debt and a court order for garnishment. After COGS has processed the order, it will begin deducting the specified amount from your Social Security retirement checks.

When the Social Security Administration (SSA) originally determined the amount of your SSI payments, it would have factored in a portion of your spouse’s income and resources. If, however, you are awarded alimony or spousal support, these payments will count as income.
What is the SSI income limit for 2020?
In general, the income limit for SSI is the federal benefit rate (FBR), which is $783 per month for an individual and $1,175 per month for a couple in 2020.
